Gigantic Jets

Thunderstorms consist of a positively charged area near the ground and a negatively charged area near the bottom of the cloud. The contrast between the negative and positive charge triggers lightning. Gigantic Jets occur when there is a suppression of these cloud-to-ground discharges, and electrical discharges come out of the top of the storm . Some have reached as high as the ionosphere (50 miles up).
